Florida’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit recently conducted an investigation with the Hialeah Police Department (Miami-Dade Country), under which it discovered that a registered behavior technician had falsified documentation and received money for services not rendered, defrauding the Florida Medicaid program out of more than $119,000.
According to the investigation, the man claimed to provide care for two minors who received Medicaid. But rather than providing services, he would visit the homes of the recipients, log in via an app on his phone to verify the visit, turn off the GPS function of the cellphone and leave. Hours later, he would return, turn the GPS function back on, and log out of the application, making it appear as if he was at the house for hours. In order to keep up these pretenses, he bribed the recipients’ parents with monetary kickbacks.
The investigation also revealed that he originally paid someone to fraudulently take his registered behavior technician certification exam.
He is now charged with one count of Medicaid fraud, a first-degree felony.
