District of Columbia Issues New Marijuana “Self-Certification” Process

marijuana

The Mayor of the District of Columbia recently signed legislation to remove the requirement that adults seeking to purchase marijuana products from licensed medical marijuana dispensaries must first obtain a recommendation from a licensed physician.

Known as the “Medical Marijuana Self-Certification Emergency Amendment Act of 2022,” this legislation was previously voted for unanimously by the City Council.

Marijuana “Self-Certification”

The new law allows adults age 21 or older to “self-certify … that they are utilizing cannabis for medical purposes” when they register for a medical marijuana identification card. Once registered, self-certified adults may access any of the D.C. medical cannabis dispensaries.

This law leaves many questioning the difference between medical and recreational marijuana usage in D.C.
