Deadline for E-Verify 10-Year Purge is March 31st

E-Verify March 31st Deadline for Purging Records is Approaching Quickly … Act Now

E-Verify records dated on or before December 31, 2006 will be purged after March 31, 2017.

Each year, in accordance with the National Archives and Records Administration’s (NARA) Records and Retention Disposal Schedule (N 1-566-08-7), the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) must dispose of E-Verify records over 10 years old to minimize security and privacy risks.

To retain important case information, employers with E-Verify records on or before December 31, 2006 must take the following steps:

  • Run the Historic Records Report from E-Verify.  This report has the information that will be purged.
  • Write the E-Verify case verification number on the corresponding Form I-9.
  • Retain the Historic Records Report along with the corresponding Form I-9.

Purging of records occurs annually.  It is highly recommended that employers create an E-Verify Record Retention Policy for future use

E-Verify Background

According to U.S. law, companies may only employ individuals who may legally work in the United States.  E-Verify is an internet-based system allowing businesses to determine eligibility of potential employees to work in the country.  It compares information from an employee’s Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) to data from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration records to confirm employment eligibility.
