Effective October 18, 2021: Maine employers are prohibited from requesting criminal record information on initial employment applications. They are also prohibited from stating in any manner that persons with criminal histories may not apply for a job. Exceptions to the new law include where federal or state laws or regulations mandate that criminal convictions disqualify an applicant for a position, require an employer not to hire an applicant who had been convicted of certain crimes, or require an employer to conduct a criminal history record check.
