Justin Johnson was arrested this week in Indiana for the fatal shooting of rapper Young Dolph. At only 23, Johnson has an extensive criminal history, including aggravated rape, robbery, gun charges, drugs, and shooting three other people. In and out of jail since he was 17, Johnson was released from prison again only six months prior to this shooting and had an outstanding warrant for a violation of supervised federal release on a prior weapons charge at the time of his arrest. In response, Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Chris Craft, the judge who let Johnson out of prison months into a prior five-year sentence reportedly stated, “It’s called the Department of Corrections not the Department of Punishment.”
At some point in these constant stream of cases, we must recognize that nothing is actually being “corrected” and take a different less dismissive approach – one that is based on far more accountability and one that places far more value on the innocent people who are being hurt or killed.
