In October, Hire Image reported that Waterloo became the first city in Iowa to pass a Ban the Box ordinance. The ordinance was recently challenged when a councilwoman made a motion to rescind it at a meeting on January 27th. However, no one seconded the motion. The ordinance has also been challenged by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry as violating a state law under which a city cannot pass any ordinance exceeding or conflicting with federal or state laws relating to hiring practices. As it stands now (pending the outcome of the lawsuit), the ordinance will become effective, as previously set, on July 1st of this year.
